POPULATION MEETING July 14, 2010 at Cochrane, ALBERTA
It’s been a long time coming, but Alberta now has its own branch of the Population Institute of Canada (PIC). Founding members, all of whom have a long history of involvement in trying to stabilize and moderate population growth and industrial consumption, were in high spirits as they met to establish guidelines for the new organization. All were optimistic that time may reveal this to be a landmark get-together. The founding members are:
* Vivian Pharis – teacher, backcountry horse enthusiast and environmental advocate
* Valorie M. Allen – tutor, author, and environment/population activist
* Dr. Brian Horejsi – wildlife scientist, public interest advocate
* Dr. David Mayne Reid – Professor of Botany, environmental issues, global climate change, visual arts
* Heinz Unger - engineer, international development professional, local water and environment volunteer
NEW MEMBERS:
* Gordon Timpson - population activist
* Kelley Abercrombie - researcher and population activist

2010 PIC Alberta Welcome
The new branch received a warm welcome from Dr. Madeline Weld, president of PIC Ottawa, on behalf of her group which was established in 1992. This educational, non-profit group is the national voice for Canadians concerned with world-wide population trends. As a voluntary Non- Government Organization, it seeks to reduce population growth by non-coercive means, through universal access to family planning, education, community outreach, and awareness-raising. The Alberta branch will be working towards this same goal in various ways, and would like to invite interested citizens to join their cause.
Alberta has been waiting a long time for a group like this to tackle the current issues of unconstrained growth, rapid resource depletion and biodiversity loss, increasing pressures on water, and unprecedented urban sprawl across agricultural land now being seen and felt in communities across the province.
If you would like to get involved, please use the contact information above.
